As a heart transplant recipient, and a past Lifebanc volunteer. I was glad to see some type of rebuttal. In my opinion, the Times piece relied heavily on info provided by ex-Lifebanc (disgruntled?) employees. I belong to a few different sites where employees, active or not, will recommend (or not) various organizations for employment. There are a few very disgruntled Lifebanc employees posting and reposting (I sense the same writing style in the posts). Elder Justice Event Finds Abuse A Growing Problem With Many Potential Solutions
National Association to Stop Guardian Abuse Apr 9, 2025 | 05:00 amAbout 10% of people 65 and older experience some form of abuse, according to the Department of Justice, and the rates are trending upward over time. As the U.S. population ages, practitioners of elder law note that it is more critical than ever for legal systems to have the means to identify, report, and prevent abuse among older adults. On Feb. 16, the Solomon Center for Health Law and Policy, in collaboration with Yale General Internal Medicine, explored these issues in a half-day symposium, “Innovating Elder Justice: Law, Medicine, and Technology to Address Abuse and Financial Exploitation in Today’s Aging Society.” The event is the latest extension of the Solomon Center’s work in elder law. Since starting in the 2019-2020 academic year, the Adrienne C. Drell and Franklin W. Nitikman Elder Law Project has focused on the intricate challenges emerging at the intersection of aging and the law. Notably, the project introduced[…]

Hard choice for a comfortable death: Sedation
National Association to Stop Guardian Abuse Apr 6, 2025 | 05:00 amNYT: Inducing sleep with drugs near the end of life, a practice called terminal sedation, is a widely used treatment, but it often frustrates families and doctors. By ANEMONA HARTOCOLLISIn almost every room people were sleeping, but not like babies. This was not the carefree sleep that would restore them to rise and shine for another day. It was the sleep before — and sometimes until — death. In some of the rooms in the hospice unit at Franklin Hospital, in Valley Stream on Long Island, the patients were sleeping because their organs were shutting down, the natural process of death by disease. But at least one patient had been rendered unconscious by strong drugs. Author: Danny Spewak SAINT PAUL, Minn — DFL lawmakers in the House and Senate re-introduced the End-of-Life Options Act this week in both chambers, a measure that would allow adults with terminal illnesses to choose to end their lives with medication. Ten states and the District of Columbia have passed similar laws, including Oregon, which serves as the model for Minnesota's proposed legislation. Under the bill, a person would need to have six months or fewer to live and must be deemed mentally capable of making medical decisions, along with a diagnosis from two independent providers. We can all do our bit to prevent financial abuse
National Association to Stop Guardian Abuse Apr 4, 2025 | 05:00 amThose who work in professional services are often best placed to spot early warning signs, allowing action to be takenby Rachel WallerThe Financial Conduct Authority recently revealed survey data showing that just four in ten vulnerable customers had made financial services providers aware of their specific needs. It also found a lack of training to address such needs, and ineffective monitoring once identified. Yet ironically, those employed in professional services are often best placed to spot signs of financial abuse — and without their vigilance, the perpetrators can escape scrutiny. And financial abuse is increasing. Hourglass, a specialist charity that targets abuse and exploitation of older people, cites a nearly 50 per cent rise in calls from victims. Likewise, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (Step) reports that 70 per cent of its UK members, including solicitors and those helping clients with estate and wealth planning, have observed instances[…]
